Newly Elected NC Democrat Faces Felony Charge Days After Upset Victory

Just days after stunningly unseating Republican incumbent Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, Democrat LaKesha Womack is scheduled to appear in court on a pending felony charge. Womack, who secured 51.1% of the vote, was served a criminal summons on October 11th related to an alleged failure to return a rental vehicle valued at $20,000 in 2019. Though the summons was issued in January 2020, it was only served recently, with her court date set for November 10th. Womack has previously acknowledged the incident, citing homelessness at the time and claiming unawareness of any criminal proceedings. This charge, a Class H felony in North Carolina, could carry a prison sentence of over two years. Under House rules, members facing such charges are expected to step aside from committee assignments and leadership positions while the case is pending, a situation that could impact Womack’s tenure beginning in January.
