Repeat Offender Leads Deputies on 100 MPH Chase, Hides Under Porch in Underwear

A high-speed chase through Colorado, reaching speeds over 100 mph and weaving through traffic, culminated in a dramatic manhunt that ended with a repeat offender, Zakary Dean Hirschfield, found hiding under a porch in his underwear. The pursuit began when a Douglas County sheriff’s deputy initiated a traffic stop for speeding, but Hirschfield suddenly accelerated, nearly hitting the deputy before speeding off. The chase, captured on video, saw Hirschfield driving recklessly, crossing medians and driving against traffic, before crashing his vehicle and abandoning his passenger. Authorities launched an extensive search involving multiple units and K9s, eventually locating Hirschfield, who had been released without cash bail on a felony robbery charge just days prior and had a history of probation violations for drug offenses. District Attorney George Brauchler criticized prior decisions that allowed Hirschfield to remain free, stating, “This case highlights the ripple effects of decisions made by other law enforcement agencies who had opportunities to lock this guy up before this dangerous episode.” Hirschfield has pleaded guilty to felony eluding and faces a five-year prison sentence, with officials emphasizing that such reckless behavior endangering the public will not be tolerated.
