An 8-year-old girl suffered critical head injuries after being attacked by at least one Arctic wolf during a special zookeeper event at Germany’s Wildpark Johannismühle, an experience designed to offer visitors, particularly children, an up-close, behind-the-scenes look at animal care. The incident occurred on October 28 as caretakers were providing water to animals within the enclosure, and despite the presence of an animal caretaker who managed to protect two other children, the young victim was mauled and subsequently airlifted to a Berlin hospital. An investigation is now underway, involving the Lower Nature Conservation Authority and the Veterinary and Food Surveillance Office, to assess the animal’s health and behavior and determine the next steps, while chaplains are providing emotional support to those affected by the traumatic event.
