Top Pentagon Strategist Fired Amid Leaks Investigation

War Secretary Pete Hegseth has fired Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia, a senior Pentagon strategic planner, following an investigation into allegations that Sylvia leaked classified information regarding the Iran war, the Russia-Ukraine conflict, and other sensitive matters to journalists. The investigation, which has been referred to the Justice Department, reportedly found that Sylvia failed three polygraph examinations. Compounding the accusations, Sylvia is also alleged to have met with journalists outside the Pentagon to leak classified material, an act occurring after Hegseth implemented stricter media escort policies. Sylvia, who served as director of the Joint Staff’s Directorate for Strategy, Plans and Policy (J5), has been sidelined from his role since spring. This development occurs amidst reports that the Pentagon is considering renewed military action against Iran, with U.S. officials reportedly warning allies in the Middle East to prepare for potential strikes and Iranian retaliation. Sylvia’s removal marks the latest in a significant turnover of senior military leadership under Hegseth, with numerous high-ranking officers having been fired or pushed out during his tenure.
