Neuer described the situation as “Orwellian” and a clear case of “the lunatics running the asylum,” pointing to Iran’s egregious and systematic human rights abuses, including the brutal suppression of women’s rights, mass surveillance, lethal force against dissenters, and its designation as a leading state sponsor of terrorism. Despite this documented record, Iran was nominated by the U.N. Economic and Social Council, with its election widely expected to pass as a mere formality in an upcoming U.N. General Assembly vote. Neuer highlighted the hypocrisy of the U.N., an organization founded on idealism, now being influenced by dictatorships, noting that Iran’s regime “beats, blinds, tortures, rapes, and imprisons women for standing up for their rights.” He further criticized Western democracies for their complicity, attributing their acquiescence to “interests, cynicism, politics, dealmaking, and a culture of ‘go along to get along,'” as ambassadors prioritize avoiding conflict over upholding principles.
