This new research, published in Cell Press Blue, indicates that targeted protein restriction can yield similar metabolic advantages, including improved metabolism, altered nutrient signaling, reduced cellular damage, and enhanced cellular maintenance, without the need for overall calorie reduction. The key appears to be a surge in fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21), a metabolic hormone triggered by lower protein intake, which animal studies show can boost energy expenditure, decrease inflammation, improve blood sugar control, and extend lifespan. Specifically, three essential amino acids—methionine, isoleucine, and valine—when consumed in excess by inactive individuals, may continuously stimulate growth-related processes, leading to cellular damage, inflammation, and weight gain over time.
