A 41-year-old Salvadoran national, Edwin Lopez-Cornejo, who had previously been deported from the U.S. in 2006, has died in federal custody at the Delaney Hall Detention Facility in Newark, New Jersey, after suffering a medical emergency on August 1st. Lopez-Cornejo was arrested by ICE on June 18th for illegally re-entering the United States following his initial apprehension and deportation after entering the country without inspection in August 2006. ICE stated that medical personnel responded to the emergency and that Lopez-Cornejo received proper medical care during his detention, with the official cause of death pending a medical examination. This incident has reignited calls from New Jersey officials, including Governor Mikie Sherrill and Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, to shut down Delaney Hall, citing it as a facility with a history of alleged obstructions to health and safety inspections and previous detainee deaths and protests. ICE has notified the Department of Homeland Security oversight offices, the Consulate of El Salvador, and Lopez-Cornejo’s next of kin.
