In a harrowing ordeal on Florida’s Silver River, Dina Rae Spann, 58, lost her right arm and part of her left hand after a brutal alligator attack while swimming with a group. The terrifying encounter unfolded when a boater, John Gamache, heard cries for help and witnessed an alligator lunging towards the swimmers. Gamache, with his father, raced to the scene, and as his boat approached, the alligator released Spann. He found her clinging to a paddleboard, suffering a catastrophic arm injury with bones exposed and severe bleeding. Acting swiftly, Gamache used rope from his boat to create a makeshift tourniquet, a critical action that likely saved Spann’s life by controlling the hemorrhaging. Despite the gruesome nature of her wounds, Spann remained remarkably calm. Gamache and his father transported Spann and the other swimmers to a nearby boat launch where emergency responders were waiting. Spann was hospitalized and, astonishingly, was reported to be in good spirits at home by the next day, though her arm required amputation below the elbow. Authorities temporarily closed the river and a 9-foot-8-inch alligator was subsequently trapped and removed, allowing the river to reopen.
