Just hours after a scathing House Ethics Committee report recommended his censure for “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct towards two young female staffers,” North Carolina Republican Representative Chuck Edwards announced he is withdrawing from his re-election campaign. The report detailed a pattern of behavior including lavish gifts, comments on appearance, invitations to intimate dinners and vacations, and notes expressing “effusive affection,” which the committee found a reasonable observer would interpret as sexual or romantic advances, despite Edwards’ denial of such intent. While the committee found no evidence of sexual activity or explicit propositions, it noted Edwards was aware of office rumors and that the staffers were uncomfortable, placing them in an “untenable position” due to his status as their boss. Edwards, who has served in the House since early 2023 and had already won his GOP primary, stated he will complete his current term, calling his service to Western North Carolina “the honor of my life.”
