Thousands of Los Angeles gun owners who faced agonizing waits of up to three years for concealed carry permits will finally see their applications processed promptly, following a landmark victory by the Department of Justice (DOJ). The DOJ announced the termination of its lawsuit against the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) after the agency dramatically reduced processing times by implementing new software and bolstering personnel, now meeting California’s strict permitting deadlines. This resolution marks a significant win for Second Amendment rights, as the DOJ’s lawsuit, filed in September 2025, was the first of its kind aimed at enforcing gun owners’ rights against excessive delays. Previously, applicants endured average waits exceeding nine months, with some facing nearly three years for a decision, a stark contrast to California law’s 90-day requirement. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon praised the sheriff’s commitment to resolving the issue, stating, “We applaud their efforts and are happy to be able to bring this litigation to a successful conclusion!” The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division initiated an investigation in March 2025 due to numerous complaints, revealing that between January 2024 and May 2025, LASD had only approved two out of 3,982 new concealed carry license applications, with over 2,700 pending.
