Carl Isom-McDaniel, a grandfather from Washington, is speaking out after a brutal bison attack at Yellowstone National Park left him with a broken femur in four places. Recounting the harrowing July 10th incident at Bridge Bay Campground, Isom-McDaniel described how the bison, which had already charged a group of teenagers, suddenly targeted him. “He just kept coming, and he was more aggressive. As soon as he got off that tree, he launched me in the air,” he stated, emphasizing the animal’s surprising speed and power. While recovering from surgery in a Montana hospital, Isom-McDaniel revealed his immediate concern was for his grandson, whom he tried to direct to safety during the attack. Witness Mike MacLeod corroborated Isom-McDaniel’s heroism, believing the grandfather saved his grandson by absorbing the brunt of the assault. MacLeod also noted that the bison had previously charged other campers, and that Isom-McDaniel and his grandson had not provoked the animal. Despite the severe injuries, including a broken femur requiring extensive medical intervention, Isom-McDaniel expressed gratitude for the care he received, stating, “I always felt safe and secure. I wasn’t ever terrified.”
