Ilhan Omar’s Deleted Tweet Fuels Speculation in Identity and Marriage Probe

A resurfaced, deleted 2013 tweet from Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., referring to her father as “Nur Said” instead of the more commonly cited “Nur Omar Mohamed,” has ignited further scrutiny amid an ongoing federal investigation into her identity and immigration records. This post, deleted in 2019, has drawn attention due to the striking similarity between “Nur Said” and the name of her former husband, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, fueling long-standing allegations that Omar may have married her brother. The resurfacing of the tweet comes shortly after federal agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence in connection with an investigation into possible false statements on immigration and naturalization documents. While Omar and her office have consistently denied the marriage allegations and any wrongdoing, labeling the probe a political attack, the name discrepancy in the deleted tweet, coupled with court documents identifying her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a.k.a. Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” has amplified questions about her true identity and the accuracy of the information provided on official documents. Omar herself has stated her real name is “Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” directly contradicting the name found in the court filing, and a spokesperson has attributed the tweet’s deletion to threats and stated “Nur Said” was a nickname. However, the potential legal ramifications for knowingly using a false name on federal forms under the federal false-statements statute loom large as the investigation continues, with the Justice Department yet to comment.
