A frantic 24-hour search for a 70-year-old man, David Arai, who vanished in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, culminated in a dramatic rescue thanks to the exceptional skills of K-9 Trina. Arai, a seasoned hiker familiar with the park’s trails, was last seen before his rental car was discovered abandoned within the park, triggering an immediate response from police, National Park personnel, and a Hawaii Fire Department helicopter. The critical turning point came when Trina, a 3-year-old Labrador retriever trained to track by scent, and her handler Officer Christopher Ross, joined the effort. Approximately two miles from where Arai’s car was found, Trina led rescuers to him, lying in bushes off a trail. Found dehydrated and exposed, Arai was safely transported to Hilo Benioff Medical Center for treatment, marking a successful end to the tense search and highlighting Trina’s remarkable ability to locate missing persons, having previously found an endangered teenager in Waikoloa.
