A Chinese national, Aili Wang, a University of Wyoming student, faces serious charges after allegedly attempting to poison a colleague who specialized in cancer research technology, a field similar to her own work in China. Surveillance footage reportedly captured Wang rinsing her colleague’s mug with a liquid from her own cup and manipulating notebooks, leading to an investigation. The substance was identified as acrylamide, a chemical known to cause health problems including cancer, which Wang allegedly purchased online. When questioned by campus police, Wang denied using the chemical, but was arrested days later at Los Angeles International Airport as she reportedly attempted to flee to China. At the time of her arrest, Wang was found with multiple laptops, external storage devices, and physical records, prompting prosecutors to significantly increase her bond. The victim, a successful student from Vietnam, has experienced severe symptoms including an inability to sleep and focus, with the acrylamide, a neurotoxin, potentially causing irreversible nerve damage. The professor overseeing both students described the situation as a “horrifying and surreal experience,” highlighting the victim’s promising cancer therapy research and Wang’s alleged envy over his achievements.
