Colombian President Endorses Florida Republican in Re-election Bid

Rep. María Elvira Salazar, R-Fla., is highlighting a significant endorsement from Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella as she campaigns for re-election to Congress. In a video shared by Salazar, the foreign leader declared her to be his nation’s “best friend” in the U.S. Congress, a powerful statement of support that underscores Salazar’s deep ties to the Colombian community. The endorsement comes as Salazar faces Democratic challenger Eliott Rodriguez, and the incumbent has previously expressed her commitment to representing the thousands of Colombians in South Florida, making Colombia a central focus of her work in Washington. Notably, President de la Espriella, who is a Colombian American citizen with property in Salazar’s district, and his wife have contributed nearly $90,000 to her campaigns, adding a financial dimension to their relationship. Salazar had previously backed de la Espriella’s election earlier this year, demonstrating a reciprocal political alliance. Having served in the House since 2021, Salazar’s campaign is leveraging this high-profile international backing to bolster her re-election efforts.
