Mall of America Terror Plot Foiled: GOP Senate Hopeful Links Incident to Election Choice

The FBI’s successful thwarting of an alleged ISIS-inspired terror plot targeting the Mall of America, where an 18-year-old suspect reportedly planned a mass shooting of non-Muslims, has become a central talking point for GOP Senate hopeful Michele Tafoya. Tafoya, campaigning in Minnesota, stated that residents “feel under a level of threat” and used the incident to draw a stark contrast for the upcoming midterm elections, arguing, “This November, the choice is clear: law and order or more of the same. Common sense or chaos.” The suspect, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, was arrested after purchasing an AK-47-style rifle and ammunition, having allegedly communicated his violent intentions to an FBI informant, with authorities confirming his goal was to kill “30 to 60 people” at a Hmong arts celebration. While other Minnesota political figures, including Democratic Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Senator Amy Klobuchar, also expressed relief and gratitude to law enforcement, Tafoya directly linked the averted tragedy to the broader electoral landscape, highlighting concerns about rising crime and terrorism as key issues for voters.
