A scathing interim staff report from the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement has ignited controversy in Arlington County, Virginia, with local Republicans accusing county officials of prioritizing undocumented immigrants over the safety of residents. The 23-page report heavily criticizes the county’s sanctuary policies, alleging they hinder federal immigration authorities from apprehending and detaining undocumented immigrants with criminal records. Matthew Hurtt, chairman of the Arlington County Republican Committee, stated that Arlington elected officials “prioritize illegal aliens over the safety of Arlington residents,” a sentiment he claims to have witnessed firsthand. The report highlights the Trust Policy rules, updated in May 2025, which reportedly prohibit the Arlington County Police Department from initiating contact with federal immigration authorities, even when encountering undocumented immigrants identified as violent felons, gang members, human traffickers, or terrorists. Further compounding the criticism, the report references a deposition where the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Arlington County and the City of Falls Church, Parisa Dehghani-Tafti, acknowledged considering immigration status when determining case outcomes and defended a memo advising prosecutors to explore alternative charges for DACA recipients accused of drunk driving to avoid deportation triggers. Hurtt denounced this as prosecutors deciding leniency for individuals often committing violent or property crimes. Dehghani-Tafti, however, has vehemently dismissed the committee report as a “political sham” and “a piece of political propaganda,” demanding the release of the full, unedited deposition transcript and accusing the committee of deliberate misrepresentations and refusing public testimony to distort the record.
