In a dramatic turn, Florida plastic surgeon Dr. Tomasz Kosowski, 47, is defending himself in a first-degree murder trial, facing the death penalty for the alleged murder and dismemberment of attorney Steven Cozzi, whom he opposed in a contentious civil lawsuit. Kosowski, clad in an orange jail jumpsuit and having waived his right to a jury, has opted for a judge to decide his fate. Prosecutors allege that Kosowski developed a hostile obsession with Cozzi, culminating in the attorney’s disappearance on March 21, 2023, after Cozzi entered his office restroom and never returned. Security footage reportedly shows a silver Toyota Tundra, identified as Kosowski’s, arriving at the office, followed by a figure in dark gloves carrying a large box into the building and later leaving with a covered wagon. The truck was later tracked to Kosowski’s home, where investigators found Cozzi’s DNA in the truck bed and garage. During a search of Kosowski’s property, authorities discovered a ballistic vest with substantial blood, burner phones, a medical first responder vest, sheriff’s patches, a gas can, hundreds of thousands in cash, passports, industrial garbage bags, and a duffel bag containing items like a Taser, brass knuckles, a crowbar, ski masks, a paralytic drug vial, and other potential murder implements. The prosecution presented evidence of Kosowski’s alleged pre-murder surveillance of Cozzi’s home and office, and his online searches for Cozzi and his husband. A chilling detail emerged from the prosecution’s account of Kosowski’s actions upon arrest: he was seen meticulously sucking on his fingers, an act interpreted as an attempt to destroy DNA evidence. Although Cozzi’s body has never been recovered, investigators tracked Kosowski’s phone to a dumpster near the Everglades, where a K-9 alerted to the presence of human remains. The garbage truck driver who collected the dumpster described an overwhelming, vile stench, and video from the truck showed numerous black industrial garbage bags consistent with a human body being dumped into the load destined for the Collier County Landfill. Prosecutors have framed the landfill as Cozzi’s burial site, with days of sifting through thousands of tons of compacted garbage yielding no remains.
