William D. DeFoor, 26, has pleaded guilty in federal court for the January 5th vandalism of Senator JD Vance’s Cincinnati home, an incident that caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage. DeFoor admitted to smashing multiple windows of the unoccupied residence with a hammer, and also targeted a federal law enforcement vehicle parked in the driveway, striking its window three times. Prosecutors stated DeFoor engaged in acts of physical violence against government property and willful injury or depredation of U.S. government property, specifically damaging government-owned security system components valued at over $28,000. Secret Service agents apprehended DeFoor near the property line after he ignored commands to stop and attempted to flee. While DeFoor’s attorney previously indicated the acts were not politically motivated and stemmed from mental health issues, and court records show a history of mental incompetency findings and related cases, U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II emphasized that such violent actions against elected officials or their property will be vigorously prosecuted, stating, “Acts of violence directed against our political leaders, their families or property, have no place in our society and will not be tolerated.” DeFoor had previously been involved in incidents requiring mental health evaluations and was under legal guardianship due to mental illness.
