Harvard University was thrown into a state of alarm Tuesday morning when a man allegedly brandished an edged weapon at a coffee shop in the heart of Harvard Square, triggering an immediate shelter-in-place order for the campus. Massachusetts State Police, in conjunction with Cambridge and Harvard University Police Departments, launched an intense search for the suspect, who was eventually apprehended. The incident, which occurred shortly after 8:45 a.m., saw law enforcement scour the area near John F. Kennedy Memorial Park for nearly an hour before the campus police issued their initial emergency alert. The suspect, who was not wielding a machete as initially reported, faces charges of assault by means of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the tense standoff that briefly paralyzed a portion of the bustling university area.
