After a 34-year wait, the final unknown victim of the notorious ‘Happy Face Killer,’ Keith Jesperson, has been identified as Lydia Jane Wade McWhorter of Texas. Her body was discovered in 1992 along a California highway, and for decades, authorities knew her only as ‘Claudia.’ The breakthrough came through advanced DNA testing, specifically genetic genealogy, which finally connected investigators to a maternal family member, confirming McWhorter’s identity. Jesperson, a long-haul trucker who confessed to killing at least eight women across multiple states, admitted to killing McWhorter. This identification marks the closure of the last unidentified victim case linked to Jesperson’s convictions, bringing a measure of peace to McWhorter’s family who had been searching for answers since her disappearance in the 1990s. Jesperson, who gained notoriety for signing his letters to the media with a smiley face, is currently serving multiple life sentences.
