Senator Chris Coons Declares US No Longer Leader of the Free World, Points to Zelenskyy

Senator Chris Coons has ignited controversy by stating that the United States is “no longer” the leader of the free world, instead identifying Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as the foremost national leader currently risking his country for freedom. Coons articulated this sentiment during a town hall, asserting, “I would say we are no longer the leaders of the free world. In fact, if anything, Volodymyr Zelenskyy is the primary national leader who is putting his country’s men and women on the line for freedom.” He further emphasized the need for the U.S. to “earn our place back as leader in the free world in the future.” These remarks come at a time when former President Donald Trump is advocating for an end to the Ukraine conflict and re-centering American power and pride. A staunch supporter of Ukraine, Coons has consistently backed military aid, robust sanctions against Russia, and sustained U.S. engagement with President Zelenskyy’s government. His office has not yet responded to requests for comment on the ensuing backlash, which includes accusations of being “anti-American” and “an embarrassment” from conservative critics and online commentators who defend America’s historical role as a global leader.
