A 17-year-old Utah boy is facing charges of aggravated murder and obstruction of justice in connection with the shooting deaths of his mother, Jessica Orton Lyman, 44, and his 8-year-old half-brother, Eli Painter. The lengthy 17-month investigation culminated in the teen’s arrest after prosecutors presented evidence suggesting a masked figure, matching the suspect’s build, was captured on neighborhood surveillance cameras roaming the area in the hours following the March 28, 2025, murders. Police responded to a medical-assist call at the family’s home, where they discovered the victims, who later died from gunshot wounds. Home surveillance footage allegedly recorded an argument between the teen and victims around 11:30 p.m., followed by three gunshots less than two minutes later. Additional video captured a masked individual, consistent in height and build with the teen, moving through the neighborhood between 2:34 a.m. and 2:59 a.m. on the night of the killings, with prosecutors suggesting the weapon may have been discarded in the nearby Jordan River. Forensic evidence, including gunshot residue on clothing worn by the teen the morning of the discovery and the teen’s DNA found beneath one victim’s fingernails and on the other’s shorts, along with handwritten notes referencing ‘serology,’ ‘DNA,’ and ‘firearm testing’ found in his room, form a crucial part of the case as authorities seek to move the proceedings to adult court.
