A seemingly ordinary traffic stop in Merced County, California, escalated dramatically when a California Highway Patrol canine officer discovered approximately 30 pounds of suspected cocaine, valued at over $817,000, concealed within a vehicle. The stop, initiated on August 12th for a traffic violation, led the officer to identify “several indicators of possible criminal activity,” prompting a search that revealed the substantial drug haul. The driver was subsequently arrested and booked into the Merced County Main Jail on charges of possession of cocaine for sale and transportation. This significant seizure by the Merced Area Gang Narcotics Enforcement Team (MAGNET) adds to a string of major drug busts in California, including recent discoveries of over 1,000 pounds of cocaine hidden in a commercial truck entering from Mexico and another $3.7 million worth of cocaine found in a shipment of cucumbers.
