Matthew McConaughey has offered a candid update on the long-rumored “Yellowstone” spin-off series, admitting that while conversations with creator Taylor Sheridan have continued, “nothing’s real yet.” Speaking on The Playlist’s “Discourse” podcast, the acclaimed actor downplayed the current status of the project, stating it’s “not any more of a thing than it was or probably any less of a thing than it was that did hit the headlines there for a while.” This clarification comes years after initial reports surfaced in 2023, coinciding with efforts to finalize the original “Yellowstone” series and uncertainty surrounding Kevin Costner’s involvement. At the time, Sheridan had expressed enthusiasm for McConaughey joining the “Yellowstone” universe, telling The Hollywood Reporter that the actor seemed a “natural fit” and that they had “spitballed a few ideas.” McConaughey reportedly expressed interest after watching the show, eager to dive into its “raw world clashing up against the modern world.” The original “Yellowstone” concluded its run in December 2024 without Costner, with his character given an off-screen death. Meanwhile, a separate spin-off, “Dutton Ranch,” starring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly as Rip Wheeler and Beth Dutton, has been announced, though Sheridan stepped away from the writers’ room for its initial season, a move that Hauser noted created challenges for the cast and crew in adapting to new creative leadership.
