Twenty-eight Israeli children, each having lost a parent serving in the country’s security forces, embarked on a transformative three-week journey across North America as part of the IDF Widows & Orphans Organization’s annual Bar/Bat Mitzvah program, a carefully curated experience designed to foster pride, connection, and resilience. The delegation, which included a weekend with host families in Chicago, a week of activities with American peers at Camp Chi in Wisconsin, and explorations of iconic New York City landmarks like Times Square and Broadway’s “The Lion King,” provided many of these young individuals with their first international travel experience. Daniel Elbaum, executive director of the organization, emphasized the intentionality behind the trip’s programming, noting that “The Lion King” was chosen for its powerful narrative of an orphan honoring his father’s memory with the support of friends, symbolizing the communal strength the children are meant to find. This journey offers a tangible connection to the Jewish people and a vital opportunity for the children to forge a strong Jewish identity and pride in Israel, which Elbaum believes is crucial in confronting antisemitism. Among the participants was 11½-year-old Tal Goldstein-Almog, a survivor of the Oct. 7 Hamas massacre and a 51-day hostage in Gaza, whose father and sister were murdered during the attack; Tal found solace and understanding among peers who shared similar experiences, stating, “Now that I came, I think I will continue taking part in these things after meeting new kids, feeling comfortable around them and understanding that we experienced the same things.” The program also saw Shadan Knefiss, herself an IDF orphan and now a counselor, supporting the next generation and bridging cultural divides as a translator for Arabic-speaking participants, highlighting the diverse backgrounds within Israel and the shared sacrifices made, particularly among the Druze community, who, like Shadan’s father, serve and die for the country.
