A prominent Republican ally of former President Trump has sounded the alarm, alleging that a powerful super PAC, bankrolled by a left-wing billionaire, is actively interfering in the GOP primary race for Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District. The Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, a super PAC heavily funded by Chris Larsen, the billionaire chairman of Ripple, has reportedly poured over $2 million into opposing incumbent Republican Congressman Andy Ogles and supporting his challenger, Charlie Hatcher. Ogles, a staunch conservative and member of the House Freedom Caucus, believes this aggressive spending by a PAC with deep ties to Democratic campaigns and climate-focused initiatives is a direct retaliation for his vocal opposition to President Biden’s clean energy subsidies, particularly those embedded in the Infrastructure and Jobs Act and the Inflation Reduction Act. “When you have a group spending roughly $2 million in a Republican primary, that tells you how much money they’re making off of government subsidies, and they’re upset that the government welfare has been taken away from them,” Ogles stated, asserting that his proximity to Trump and his plainspoken stance on energy policy make him a target. Larsen, who has contributed millions to various Democratic committees and PACs, including significant donations to support Kamala Harris’s past presidential campaign, has made climate change his philanthropic priority, aiming to influence energy policy through his investments and donations. The super PAC itself, through its executive chairman, has explicitly stated that politicians opposing clean energy do so at their own political peril, signaling a clear intent to unseat Ogles.
