Mark Kelly: Trump’s Policies Fueling AOC’s Rise as Democratic Presidential Pick

Senator Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., has directly attributed the surging popularity of progressive firebrand Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as a potential 2028 Democratic presidential nominee to the economic policies enacted by President Donald Trump. Kelly, who himself is considering a 2028 presidential run and recently polled third behind Ocasio-Cortez in a New Hampshire primary survey, argued that Trump’s focus on benefiting billionaires over working people is creating widespread frustration among voters. “The policies of this president — supporting billionaires over hardworking people,” Kelly stated to Fox News Digital, explaining the resonance of Ocasio-Cortez and other Democratic Socialists. “1% of the country now owns more wealth than the middle class, and I think it’s a response to that.” This sentiment emerges as Democratic Socialists have seen success in recent primary elections, indicating a growing progressive influence within the party. Kelly further criticized Trump, calling his administration corrupt and self-serving, suggesting that this perceived neglect of ordinary citizens is precisely what is driving Democrats towards more left-leaning candidates like Ocasio-Cortez.
