He humorously acknowledged the original speech would have been a “doozy,” but stated “something changed it — really for the better.” The president, who spoke for over an hour, thanked the Secret Service for their protection during the attack and daily, even quipping about seeking a third term. The evening, however, was not without its barbs, as Trump playfully mocked California Governor Gavin Newsom, Vice President Kamala Harris, and Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, even referencing Pritzker’s physique in a roundabout way. He also took aim at Senator Chuck Schumer’s stance on the Israel-Hamas war, offering a sarcastic jab about sending him a Palestinian outfit. Amidst the humor, Trump also called for term limits in Congress, sharing a risqué anecdote. The event also served to honor U.S. Secret Service Officer Victor Gonzales, whose bravery in stopping the armed suspect, Cole Allen, was highlighted. Trump concluded by playfully announcing a “scoop” for the press, donning a “TRUMP 2028” hat, and vowing to return the following year, provided the press remained “not too nasty.”
