Two Colombian nationals, Yareht Pedraza, 26, and Alan Pena Sabogn, 21, both from Bogotá, were apprehended in California following a sophisticated police effort that utilized automated license plate readers to track a stolen Mercedes-Benz. The luxury vehicle was initially reported stolen during a violent carjacking and assault with a deadly weapon in Hawthorne, California, on July 11. Days later, the car’s whereabouts were flagged by license plate readers as it traveled through Rolling Hills Estates, with deputies also discovering its connection to a recent residential burglary in Torrance. A traffic stop was initiated near Palos Verdes Drive North and Rolling Vista Drive, during which one suspect fled on foot. A swift perimeter was established, and with the assistance of an LASD airship, the fleeing passenger was quickly located and taken into custody. Pedraza was arrested at the scene as the driver, while Sabogn was apprehended shortly after and faces charges including failing to obey a lawful order, obstructing a peace officer, and providing false identification. Compounding the charges, Sabogn also had an outstanding felony no-bail burglary warrant from Colorado. The sheriff’s department highlighted this arrest as a prime example of how technology, proactive policing, and inter-agency collaboration are instrumental in swiftly identifying and apprehending suspects, thereby enhancing community safety.
