Mother and Daughter Feared Dead After Suspected Grizzly Bear Attack on Familiar Trail

A beloved art therapist and her daughter, both experienced outdoorswomen, are feared dead after a suspected grizzly bear attack on a hiking trail just minutes from their Bella Coola, British Columbia home. Jennifer Balcarras, 48, and her 20-year-old daughter Selah Reed, were reported missing Saturday when Balcarras failed to make a scheduled online meeting. Relatives, growing increasingly concerned, requested a welfare check on Sunday, leading authorities to discover Balcarras’ vehicle at the Snooka West Trailhead. While Balcarras’ body was recovered Monday, search teams continued their efforts, locating Reed’s body on Tuesday. Investigators from the British Columbia Conservation Officer Service have stated there is evidence suggesting a bear was involved, and efforts are underway to locate and capture any potentially dangerous animals. This tragic incident follows a similar bear-related attack near Bella Coola less than a year ago, raising renewed concerns about human-wildlife conflict in the region.
